Abundant Care CBO’s four thematic areas were developed to address the most pressing needs of the beneficiaries that the organisation serves. This includes:

1. Environmental Sustainability

At Abundant Care CBO, we are committed to making a positive impact on the environment and creating a sustainable future for Machakos County. Our Environmental Sustainability Programmes reflect our dedication to reducing our environmental footprint, conserving natural resources, and promoting eco-friendly practices. Our key areas of interest include:

• Reduction of Carbon emissions by advocating for a reduction in the use of fossil fuels and adoption of green energy.
• Helping households and communities transition towards cleaner energy sources by investing in renewable energy.
• Advocating for tree planting to create carbon sinks.
• Advocating for waste reduction, recycling and re-purposing of materials that would have ended up in landfills.
• Advocacy for water conservation through the adoption of water-efficient technologies and responsible water management practices in homes, schools, farms and industries.
• Preservation of biodiversity to maintain ecological balance.

Our Environmental Sustainability Programmes are a testament to our commitment to making a positive difference. Together with our stakeholders, we are working towards a greener, more sustainable future for generations to come.

2. Livelihood Support Programmes

We understand that caring for a person with disabilities can be a life-long commitment for the parents, family members and caregivers. We also appreciate the fact that levels of disability differ from person to person, and there are many cases where a little assistance could lift such persons out of poverty and live a meaningful life. However, lack of livelihood support has chained many people and their families to a vicious cycle of poverty.

At Abundant Care CBO, we have a strategic focus on, and commitment to developing the most practical and sustainable routes out of poverty into independence for PWDs and their households. This includes initiating and supporting farming projects for households supporting PWD to enhance food and nutritional security, forming mutually supportive groups, training on entrepreneurship and linking beneficiaries up with micro-lenders to access capital to start and upscale businesses, as well as providing business development/acceleration services to ensure the success and growth of new ventures.

3. Promoting Access to Education and Opportunities

It is said that education is the key to a better and more successful life. It opens up people’s minds to conceive greater things and solutions to one’s own and societal problems. By widening access to education opportunities for PWD, we contribute to the intellectual and psychosocial empowerment of the beneficiaries to make them better problem solvers. Through vocational training and by expanding opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship and higher learning, we open up a whole new world for the beneficiaries to uplift themselves out of poverty and become real contributors towards solving the many socio-economic challenges that face society today. 

4. Widening Access to Quality Healthcare and Assistive Devices

Many PWDs have to contend with different and often difficult to solve health challenges that need constant care and good management. However, this can be expensive, and in some cases spiralled families down the road to poverty as they sell their assets to foot medical bills. At Abundant Care, we believe that ill health doesn’t necessarily have to lead to poverty and desperation. This has inspired our new initiative that uses different channels to fundraise for our members’ healthcare bills and procure assistive devices. By mobilising public support, and through health insurance schemes such as the NHIF, we believe that many of our members’ healthcare challenges can be solved while still retaining the livelihoods and dignity of our members intact.

5. Advocacy for Inclusion and Mainstreaming of the disability agenda in Public Life

For decades matters of disability have been discussed in low tones. Many PWDs have been hidden for public life, and families of PWDs have had to bear the stigma of having to care for members with special needs. However, the world has realised that disability is not an inability, and there is now wider space for participation by PWDs.

Despite the many beautiful provisions against discriminations in the constitution and laws of Kenya, PWDs have nonetheless had to assert their positions to partake of their legal rights. At Abundant Care CBO, we serve as the voice of the many voiceless PWDs who might lack the power to assert their rights. Through our advocacy programme, we sensitize the public on the needs and rights of PWDs in ways that build equity and understanding as opposed to pity. Through leadership training and mentorship, we widen opportunities for PWDs to participate in public life and contribute to the socio-political and economic development of the County, the Country and the region.
